Los Karkis, or Los Carcinos as it is known in Chile, is a Chilean rock band from the Viña del Mar area, who started their career in 1963. In 1967 they released their first LP with the famous song "La Verde" which set the tone for what would become their trademark sound - an electric guitar that was mixed with more traditional sounds of instruments like accordion and saxophone.Their popularity exploded after releasing "Norte Grande", closely followed by "Pinochet no murio en la guerra". Their songs have been used by protesters during clashes with police. And they are considered Chile’s best-known protest band of all time. Los Karkis was formed in 1963. The band consisted of three founding members; the musicians Ricardo Ivarradás (bassist, vocalist), Patricio Carrasco (guitarist) and Pedro Flores (saxophonist). They played in many venues like "Club de la Universidad de Chile" (Chile) and "Casa del Tenista" as well as playing as a backing band for other artists. In 1967 they released their first album "La Verde" which would become a hit throughout the country. After releasing the album they decided to take a break from their music career due to other obligations such as studying law at university and starting a family. In 1969 they got back to playing music again and began recording another album. In this album they released the hit song "Hopscotch" which would become quite popular among the young generation of Chileans. This would lead them to perform at many television shows and concerts across Santiago including a performance at Plaza de la Constitución in 1973 to a crowd of over a hundred thousand people. In the same year they also released their second album "Pinochet no murio en la guerra". The band became known as one of the loudest bands in Chile, as for that time it was socially acceptable to play loud rock music as long as you could show that you sympathized with their cause. That was the case of Los Carcinos, which became known throughout Chile for their progressive and revolutionary lyrics. Singer Ricardo Ivarradás was also known to get into many conflicts with authorities for his political beliefs and the band's "bold" lyrics.They would then record several albums such as "El Asceta" (1974), "Luna de los Andes" (1975), which had their biggest hit entitled "Sangre de mi Sangre", and also a greatest hits album in 1976. Then in 1978 they released their seventh and last studio album called "Vivo y Directo". The band broke up shortly after due to Ricardo Ivarradas wanting to pursue a solo career. After they broke up, Ricardo Ivarradas went on to be a successful solo artist with two albums, "Los Carcinos" (1987) and "Intensidad de la Luz" (1989). He also became the senator of the Chilean Socialist Party in 1989, but was forced to leave office due to his political views.Singer Ricardo Ivarradas currently lives in Spain where he still plays music.
